Mapperley Fantasy Gamer Jailed For Possessing Images Of Child Porn

Thomas Woolnough, a casino worker who has an interest in fantasy games, has been jailed for 6 months for the possession of sexual images of children that he obtained from the dark web. He had been previously convicted for the possession of sexually explicit images of children in 2011, in addition to that, he was also caught for the same in May.

On October 20, after he pled guilty for possessing 107 prohibited media content of children, he was sentenced for 6 months in jail at Nottingham Crown Court. According to court documents, police has found 87 illegal images and 20 videos at Woolnough’s house in Mapperley Park.

In order to limit and monitor any contact with children, Judge Andrew Hamilton ordered Woolnough to sign the sex offenders’ register for seven years and made him the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Orders. The judge made this statement:

“What clearly is the problem it that you have an unnatural desire and interest in children.”

In 2011, Woolnough had been previously before court for 16 offences of making indecent or pseudo photos of children. For those offends he committed he was sentenced to a two-year community order, ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register and made Woolnough attend an internet sex offender treatment course.

When police came to Woolnough’s house in May 2015 and asked if he had any indecent photos of children on his computer, he confessed there were “digital photos of children that might be borderline”. Judge Hamilton told Woolnough in court:

“These sudo images don’t actually mean a child is being abusive and, in this case, this offence is less serious than you actually looking at indecent photos of children.”

The judge also stated that his greatest fear was that this desire of Woolnough may lead to displaying it in a more aggressive way to children. The judge added this:

“You haven’t and I hope you won’t.”

Woolnough also stated to police, he did not see anything illegal in the images he had previously found on the dark net. Matthew Smith, Woolnough’s lawyer, made this statement regarding the case:

“There is no suggestion he has been grooming young girls or there was any contact that would put any girl at risk. The real mitigation is his guilty plea at the first opportunity. He accepts entirely his position is aggravated by his relevant previous conviction.”

Woolnough found most of the images in a “legal search” on the clearnet, however, he admitted that he made sexual gratification on them. Matthew Smith said this in Woolnough’s defense:

“He justifies it by saying, ‘well, as I’m viewing these images it comes from a fantasy world of cartoons, a world I inhabit from time-to-time when playing games’. He accepts that the one issue for your honour is the fact that those images again relate to children. He is a hardworking man. He works at a casino. They have full knowledge of his previous conviction. He does not drink or take drugs. There are no concerns about his friends and associates.”
