It is evident bitcoin can be used for a lot more than most people give it credit for. One Reddit user in Philadelphia got his bike stolen while ensuring a day out, which is never a fun experience. After posting about it on the Philadelphia subreddit, someone took the time to send the person nearly US$100 worth of bitcoin. As a result, he was able to start saving up some money for a new bike.

Bitcoin Donations Can Help Everyone

it is heartwarming to see someone on Reddit tip a random stranger in bitcoin. While this is usually done in small amounts, one user effectively tipped US$98.28 to the Reddit user thanks for the platform’s built-in Minitip solution. This money can – and hopefully, will – be used to start saving up for a new bike after the original poster reported how their bike got stolen in the span of two minutes.

It has to be said, the original report is somewhat disconcerting. Having your bike stolen after entering a church for all but two minutes goes to show some people have no decency whatsoever. Not putting a lock on the bike, even for that short amount of time, was a regretful decision as well, though. Always lock your bike, regardless of how long you will be spending time inside a building.

One Reddit user, who goes by the name of HCDTD sent the original bike owner an 84,000 bits tip on Reddit to help him cover the losses. While buying a bike for US$100 is not possible these days, at least the donation will soften the blow somewhat. Considering how this transaction occurred between two complete strangers, it goes to show bitcoin is quite a powerful currency when people learn to see it properly. Such a transaction would never take place in cash, mobile payments, or even a credit card transaction.

It is quite interesting to see how little attention this bitcoin transaction has gotten outside the cryptocurrency community, though. Most people in this thread ignored the donation and slammed the original post for being stupid and careless. There is no reason to rub more salt in the wound after the deed has been done. Thankfully, it looks like the original bike owner has seen some positive support as well. An interesting story, that much is certain.
