Unbeknownst to millions of Bitcoin users across the globe, a mysterious character lurking inside the deep web holds the authority and power to push out update notices and security alerts to every single bitcoin wallet using the little-known but highly powerful Alert System.
The alert system can display notifications on the status bar to alert you if you’re running a version that needs to be upgraded for an important security update.
The creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, vanished in 2010 with over one million Bitcoins he mined while holding the lion’s share of the network hashrate. But in addition to his millions in Bitcoins, when Satoshi disappeared, he took with him something of far greater value.
Nakamoto is among the three known individuals of earth possessing the private key to Bitcoin’s Alert System. And this dangerous secret key has the power to unlock a Pandora’s box of hell on the innocent masses.
Only alerts that are signed by a specific ECDSA public key are considered valid. The known private key holders are Satoshi Nakamoto, Gavin Andresen and theymos. There are other people able to issue alerts in the event of the incapacitation of the aforementioned.
This means that if Nakamoto decided to, or if he were compelled by force, he could send out a bogus security alert to millions of Bitcoin worldwide, even providing a download link to some nefarious version of the bitcoin wallet.
Will Satoshi use his power to unlock the evils of the darkweb? Should Gavin change the keys to protect the innocent? Log in below using your favorite social network and weigh in on the discussion.
