In the fight against the corona virus, the shared hopes of science and politics are currently weighing on smartphone apps. Spanish researchers have now developed a blockchain-based mobile application that, among other things, is intended to ensure compliance with the social distancing requirements. For example, users can use the app to obtain licenses for shopping in the supermarket.

Anyone who watches talk shows, takes a look at the newspaper or clicks through the Internet will inevitably notice one thing in the discussion about the Corona virus these days: Despite all the disagreement about measures and the further timetable, politics and health experts are united in the ongoing crisis at the moment there is hope for a suitable mobile solution. A corona app is to be used to reveal chains of infection, to identify those affected and to bring a bit of normalcy to the suddenly broken everyday life.

Social distancing thanks to the Corona app

Researchers at the University of Salamanca now want to have developed such software together with the Spanish Institute for Artificial Intelligence AIR. Here, the scientists want to use blockchain technology and artificial intelligence to curb the spread of the pathogen SARS-CoV-2. The research team will present their idea in an interview with the engineering magazine Spectrum.

The Corona app aims to ensure that people adhere to the requirements of social distance. For this purpose, the application creates digital identities for its users, which are secured using distributed ledger technology. Online profiles and licenses can then be assigned to these profiles, which entitle them to shop or go to work every day. In future, crowds of people in front of pharmacies, supermarkets and post offices could be avoided.

At the same time, the app should provide its users with recommendations for action and warn of possible sources of infection. Here, the developers take advantage of the potential of artificial intelligence. The software is to independently evaluate official health data and media reports, thereby modeling the further spread of the virus.

With our app we try to provide information about the COVID-19 pandemic and the development of the virus. At the same time, we want to help medical professionals and government officials make decisions about the pandemic,

the researchers summarize the goals of their project in a joint interview. However, the app is currently still in the test phase and requires additional funding. The scientists leave open when the Corona app could be used.

Fighting the virus – can blockchain apps help?

While calls for Corona apps are getting louder, numerous development teams around the world are using blockchain recipes to curb the further spread of the virus.

PwC’s management consultants recently developed a corona pass for workplaces that users can use to show their test results. The sports platform Socios.com wants to use such immunity guarantees for the attendance of football games and sporting events. The app from the Dutch public health blockchain consortium, in turn, is designed to protect non-infected people from possible contagion risks via their movement profiles.
