In the crypto capital of Zug, customers can now pay with Bitcoin at Spar. The Layer 2 solution Lightning makes it possible.

Global grocery retailer Spar has introduced Bitcoin-based payments in

the Swiss city of Zug, according to a LinkedIn post by DFX.swiss, a crypto-to-fiat payment solutions company.

The Bitcoin payment option is processed using the Layer 2 solution Lightning and is enabled via BTCMap, a community project that highlights stores that accept BTC payments.

“This SPAR location is among the first supermarkets in Switzerland to offer Bitcoin payment (via LNURL) directly at the checkout,” writes DFX.swiss. Shoppers simply need to scan a simple quick response code (QR code).

This further advances crypto adoption in Switzerland. The country has long been considered one of the leading crypto hubs in Europe, with some of the most advanced adoption initiatives.

In 2023, for example, the Swiss city of Lugano became one of the first municipalities in the world to introduce Bitcoin and Tether-USDT payments for all municipal fees.

According to data from BTCMap, there are currently 1,013 shops and businesses in Switzerland that accept Bitcoin payments. The region around Zug is commonly referred to as “Crypto Valley.”

The CV VC Top 50 Report, published in January, shows that crypto companies in Crypto Valley secured $586 million in funding in 2024.
Billion-dollar projects originating in this region include Cardano, Cosmos, Ethereum, Near Protocol, Solana, Toncoin, Tezos, Pyth Network, Curve DAO Token, 21.co, and Gnosis Safe.
