Last night I spent most of the full moon passing over me to test out Ethereum mining performance on AMD’s best Radeon RX Vega 64 graphics cards, as well as the hugely expensive and amazingly fast TITAN Xp from NVIDIA.

I’ve got a detailed article coming soon, but I thought I would share preliminary results of these two cards with you now, before the big article goes live.

I used AMD’s Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition, overclocking the 8GB of HBM2 from its stock 945MHz to 1100MHz, resulting in mining performance that went through the roof.

AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition

HBM2 @ 1100MHz – 42.9MH/s sustained ETH mining performance

POWER LIMIT

  • -21% power (327W) – 42.9MH/s @ 54C @ 980RPM
  • -25% power (303W) – 42.9MH/s @ 46C @ 960RPM
  • -28% power (294W) – 42.8MH/s @ 49C @ 965RPM

After 25-30 minutes of constant ETH mining, the RX Vega 64 LCE was stable at 42.9MH/s while consuming 294W of power, running at a stable 50C with the fan at 960RPM.

NVIDIA TITAN Xp

@stock – 35MH/s (200W) @ 62C @ 1750RPM

GDDR5X CLOCKS

  • +610MHz (275W) – 42.5MH/s @ 79C @ 2350RPM
  • +740MHz (280W) – 42MH/s @ 65C @ 2350RPM

POWER LIMIT

  • -power to 80% – 40MH/s (250W) @ 79C @ 2350RPM
  • -power to 85% – 41.3MH/s (265W) @ 80C @ 2350RPM
  • -power to 95% – 42.4MH/s (290W) @ 80C @ 2350RPM
  • +power to 120% – 42MH/s (300W) @ 80C @ 2350RPM

When increasing the fan speed on the TITAN Xp to 75% (3600RPM) the temps dropped to 65C but there was no additional performance.

More Results Soon

I have a full article coming on this soon, but just from the initial testing, we can see AMD’s superior compute performance when it comes to Ethereum mining. We have 42MH/s or more of mining performance, at 295W of power while the TITAN Xp is capable of 42MH/s of ETH mining performance at the same 295-300W power consumption.

But AMD’s Radeon RX Vega 64 LCE costs just $599 in comparison to the TITAN Xp which is double the price at $1199. Not that you’d go out and spend $1199 buying the TITAN Xp for Ethereum mining, but I have the hardware here so I thought I’d do some testing to clear the air once and for all.

AMD Radeon RX Vega is a great card for compute applications and mining (I really think the GPU Tach is built for miners… #tinfoilhat), but the power consumption can get in the way. The RX Vega 64 LCE is a great card, as it keeps the card MUCH COOLER than the air-cooled RX Vega 64, which is heavily featured in my upcoming article.

More results soon!
