The servers of the mixing platform “Bestmixer.io” were confiscated by the authorities. Now the users of this service are to be explored to reconstruct criminal cash flows.

Today, one of the world’s leading providers of cryptocurrency mixing systems has been successfully closed. The “Bestmixer.io” service was operated by the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) in close collaboration with Europol and the Luxembourg authorities.

Bestmixer.io was one of the three largest cryptocurrency blenders and offered services for mixing bitcoins, bitcoin cash and litecoins. Launched in May 2018, the service generated revenues of at least $ 200 million (approximately 27,000 bitcoins) in one year and guaranteed client anonymity.

The investigation, initiated by FIOD in June 2018 and supported by cybersecurity firm McAfee, led to the seizure of six servers in the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Are users of the service now being explored?

A mixer is a service offered to mix potentially identifiable or “corrupted” cryptocurrencies with others to anonymize the path to the original source.

The previous investigation of this case has shown that many of the mixed cryptocurrencies on Bestmixer.io had a criminal origin or destination. In these cases, the mixer was probably used to conceal and launder criminal cash flows.

The Dutch FIOD has collected information about all interactions on this platform. These include IP addresses, transaction details, bitcoin addresses and chat messages. This information will now be analyzed by FIOD in cooperation with Europol and shared with other countries.
